Parish Taxes 2019

Tax bills have been issued and mailed to town taxpayers. The adopted 2019 budget includes a tax increase for taxpayers in the town outside the village. The county, who prepares the tax bills for county and town taxes, recently sent us a document to verify the amounts of money to be raised by taxes.

How much your taxes go up depends on whether you are a village resident or a resident of the town outside the village. Here are the numbers for village residents. Taxes for village residents will decrease for the 2019 budget year.

2019 taxes to be raised 2018 taxes to be raised % change
Townwide - general 398,233 393,335 1.2
Townwide - highway 215,141 -100
Fire 210,450 200,450 5.0
Total town 608,683 808,926 – 24.8
Tax rate $4.84 $6.46 – 25.1

For residents of the town outside the village, these are the numbers.

2019 taxes to be raised 2018 taxes to be raised % change
Townwide - general 398,233 393,335 1.2
Townwide - highway 215,141 -100
Town outside village - general 1,940 100
Town outside village – highway 468,721 169,365 176.8
Fire 210,450 200,450 5.0
Total town 1,079,344 978,291 10.3
Tax rate $9.29435 $8.11352 9.26

While taxes funded by spending are up 10.3%, the tax rate is up less due to an increase in property tax valuation in town. Overall spending in the general fund (townwide and town outside village) to be raised by taxes increased by $6,929. Overall spending in the highway fund (townwide and town outside village) to be raised by taxes increased by $84,215. Overall spending in the fire fund (townwide and town outside village) increased by $10,000.

In 2020, we anticipate that village resident tax rates will increase, although not to 2018 levels, while town outside village taxpayers should experience some tax rate relief as certain expenses charged townwide in 2018 and charged to town outside village in 2019 are once again charged townwide. This applies to highway expenses, which the town has been trying to allocate in the most fair way possible between village taxpayers and town-outside-village taxpayers.
